Think back to summer times spent at the local pool as a kid. Remember that? And remember gazing in awe at the bigger kids jumping off the high dive?

How totally fun it looked. And how totally jealous of them you were.

You swore up and down one day you were going to rock that high dive. And it was going to be the best day of your entire life.

But something held you back.

What if I do something stupid and everyone sees?

What if I hit the bottom of the pool and die?

That’s it… I’m going to die.

I’m going to fall off the thing backward, belly-flop into the water, and die right here in front of everyone.

Fear. The worst four-letter F-word there is.

How long did you let it keep you grounded? Too long, most likely.

But I bet ya anything you finally gathered up enough courage to pull yourself up that ladder… am I right? It may have taken you a few tries, and you may have started to shake when you reached the top, but then there was the jump…

The jump that changed your young little life forever.

You wondered how you were ever afraid to do that. It was amazing! And from then on out your parents had to pry you away from the high dive with a crowbar.

But now your grown ass has new high dive goals to accomplish. And they come with new grown ass fears.

So how do you handle it now? How do you overcome these fears and finally start living your best life possible?

I’m so glad you asked… Let’s dive on in.

1. Understand Fear Doesn’t Control You

Do me a favor. Think about your goal. Then figure out why you’re scared to go for it.

I’ll give you a minute to work it all out… (enter the Jeopardy theme song)…

Now, is it because of what people may think? Fear of failure? No idea how to get started? Think it’s impossible?

Honestly, it could be anything. Anything at all! And I guarantee you they all have one thing in common…

It’s just an emotion.

That’s right. Fear, no matter what it is, is just an emotion. And do you want to know the great news about that?? You can control it!

We are born with the ability to feel fear in order to protect ourselves from danger and the unknown. However, unless your goal is to wrestle down a grizzly bear, the danger is unfounded. It’s all in your head. It’s the “what if” deadly scenario!

Once you realize that and are able to wrap your mind around it, you can start to control and overcome the fear holding you back.

And that, my friend, is when all your hidden superpowers come out to play.

2. Trust Yourself More

Check you out, you Rockstar. Look at everything you’ve gone through in life. And you made it out in all your fine-ass glory.

Probably better than ever. Am I right?

But even with all your past victories, fear still makes you underestimate yourself. Doubt… worry… they’re all there too. (They’re a tight-knit group of punks.)

So why are you letting them push you around?

Look back at all the past situations you made it through that you thought would be impossible. Things you thought would bring you down and you’d never be able to recover from.

You fought back. You stood your ground. You may not have done it gracefully all the time (I’m a serial belly-flopper myself), but you still came out on top.

So what now makes you think you can’t take on any challenge in life? Especially if it’s one you really want to tackle?

Trust yourself more, friend. You got this. And you will rock it.

3. Think Outside the Box

Doing things in the same way because it’s the way it’s always been done is a recipe for a boring life. It’s somebody else’s life. It’s their way of thinking and their ideas.

If you’re trucking head-on towards a goal and run into a barrier, stop and think about it for a minute. Is it truly a barrier? Or is the barrier there because someone else said it was there?

You may have the instinct to stop and turn around. Which is understandable because that’s what most people do. But I urge you to reconsider. (Can I even say beg you to reconsider??)

I always say there’s more than one way around a problem, and there’s more than one way around that barrier. It may be an unconventional way. Hell, it may be a controversial way (to which I say bravo and have fun!). But there is almost always a way.

Think outside the box and don’t be afraid to try something new. Something different. And something that pushes you outside your comfort zone. Just think of what the end result will be… that freaking goal you’ve been craving!

Not sure how to come up with alternative solutions? Bounce the thought off trusted friends or family. You can even ask me if you like! Stop and look around at related situations of others. And all else fails, it’s always worth a Google!

The answers are out there. It’s up to you to push yourself out of that box and go find them.


4. Surround Yourself with Positive People

We are a product of our environment. There’s no question about that. We’re like awesome little sponges that absorb everything around us, whether we want to or not.

So it goes without saying that we should surround ourselves with the best environment possible!

Now I know, some of it is out of our control. It is what it is. I like to think those bits make us stronger anyway. But the rest of it… the rest is there to mold and adjust any way we please.

And if you have Negative Nancys all around, those negative thoughts will become implanted in you and grow without you even realizing it’s happening. Negative Nancy will bring you down right along with her.

Kick Nancy to the curb. Go find yourself some winners to hang out with.

5. Know It’s OK to Freak the F@$k Out

Oh it’s gonna happen. Anytime you do something against the grain it’s going to make you freak the f@$k out eventually.

Just know… that’s ok!!

Allow yourself to feel that way. Get it all out of your system. Go bananas if you have to.

Trust me, I freak the f@$k out all the time. And that always seems to surprise people about me. They think since I started the journey outside my comfort zone that I’ve become a cool, collected pro at it.

Ha! I wish!!

I have meltdowns all the time. But you know what the difference is? I pick myself up afterward and keep going. I know what I want and I keep at it, no matter what.

So have at it. Let that anxiety flag fly. Then pull your hot ass together and keep moving. You’ve got places to go and barriers to break.

6. Trust It’s Possible

It’s a Friday afternoon and I’m writing this post from a charming little bed and breakfast in the English countryside of the Cotswold. Now, if you had told me a year ago that I’d be here, making my living from a laptop and able to travel and work wherever I want, I would have thought you’d lost your ever-lovin’ mind.

But anything is possible.

A corny saying? Maybe. But a bit of truth behind it? You betcha.

Truth is, I somehow always knew this was my destiny. I didn’t know who, what, when, where, why, or how it was going to happen… but it was always in the back of my mind.

Recently, my friend Jamie even commented on that very thing on my Facebook page. She said, “11 years ago you knew your future was in Europe; it is crazy how our minds give us these ‘gut feelings’. I’m SO happy for you!”.

And she’s totally right (and totally awesome). Gut feelings are powerful things. Your inner voice knows what it’s talking about.

If you feel driven to do something, for the love of everything good and holy – go for it! You may be driving into it blindly, just like I did, but I guarantee you things happen when they are supposed to. The path in front of you will clear and you’ll start gaining momentum and distance.

All you have to do is trust that anything is possible. Block out the outside noise and listen to your inner voice. That badass mofo will steer you in the right direction if you let it.
